Borgo di Oliveto

Approaching Monteveglio, one cannot help but be enchanted by the history of the ancient village of Oliveto. We know that this hilltop territory was originally called Casale Sociorum and that in 776 it was donated by the Lombard dukes to the Abbey of Nonantola, which owned it until the citizens became independent in 1131. In the 10th century, the village took its current name from the mountain on which it stands, Monte Oliveto, which in turn was inspired by the surrounding olive trees that are so characteristic in this area. In the 19th century, the French eliminated the Municipality of Oliveto, absorbing it into the Monteveglio territory.

Several historical and artistic remains are still preserved in the village. Among these are the Casa Grande dell’Ebreo. Built in 1410, this was home to the Jewish community and also the area’s first bank. You will also find the Bronzina, which was a hotel for the Spanish Grandees in 1527. Another historical site is the Church of San Paolo, whose existence has been recorded as early as 1033.
