The Gessaroli

This ancient craft has long been a tradition of the hilly territory between Zola Predosa and Casalecchio di Reno. The Gessaroli were chalk quarrymen, responsible for extracting the material from the hills in this area. The path that still follows the route taken by the Gessaroli takes its name from this profession. Arriving in Zola Predosa from Casalecchio, you will cross Via Gessi and a Park of the same name. Further south are Monte Rocca and Monte Capra, the main sources of the territory’s chalk extraction.

This area has recently been acknowledged by UNESCO: the “Gessi dell’Emilia-Romagna” is among the natural assets recognized as a World Heritage Site. This award involves different areas, touching four provinces. Among these are Bologna and the chalk deposits of Zola Predosa, which includes the area of Monte Rocca, Monte Capra, and Tizzano.
